Sports Premium

Our Vision

To ensure that all children receive a minimum of two hours of high-quality Physical Education each week and are supported to be physically active throughout the school day, including through active playtimes. We aim to develop sustainable, high-quality PE provision that increases participation in physical activity and competitive sport, supports healthy and active lifestyles, and contributes positively to pupils’ engagement, wellbeing and learning across the curriculum.

PE, Sport and Physical Activity at Gosforth Park First School

At Gosforth Park First School, we are committed to encouraging every child to participate in high-quality PE, sport and physical activity. We want all pupils to have opportunities to develop their skills, build confidence, experience a wide range of activities and discover new ways of being active.

Our priority is to help children understand the importance of regular physical activity as part of a healthy, active lifestyle. We also recognise the important role that staff, parents and carers play in encouraging positive attitudes towards physical activity.

We aim to increase participation in physical activity both within and beyond the school day through active playtimes, extracurricular opportunities, school tournaments, competitions and festivals.

Through PE and sport, we promote important values including self-belief, teamwork, determination, honesty, passion and respect. We encourage pupils to develop resilience, confidence and a positive attitude towards participation and competition.

Gosforth Park First School recognises the important contribution that PE, sport and physical activity make to the wider health and wellbeing of our children. We believe that a broad, balanced and high-quality curriculum, supported by appropriate extracurricular opportunities, can have a positive impact on pupils’ physical development, wellbeing, concentration and engagement with learning.

We endeavour to engage as many children as possible in the widest appropriate range of physical activities and sports. Our curriculum is planned to ensure that pupils benefit from at least two hours of high-quality Physical Education each week.

PE and Sport Premium 2026–2027

The Department for Education provides the Primary PE and Sport Premium to eligible primary schools to support additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, funding is calculated using the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6 recorded in the January 2026 school census. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £6,240 plus £10 per eligible pupil.

Gosforth Park First School had 211 eligible pupils recorded in Years 1 to 6. Based on the Department for Education's 2026–2027 funding formula, our anticipated PE and Sport Premium allocation is therefore:

£6,240 + (211 × £10) = £8,350

The school's final allocation will be confirmed when the Department for Education publishes individual school allocations for 2026–2027.

We will use this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity available to our pupils. In particular, the funding will be used to build capacity and capability within school so that improvements made during 2026–2027 continue to benefit pupils in future years.

All funding will be used in accordance with the Department for Education's PE and Sport Premium conditions of grant for 2026–2027 and will be spent by 31 July 2027.

Our PE and Sport Premium Objectives

At Gosforth Park First School, our objectives are:

  • To increase the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and support children to develop healthy, active lifestyles.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to be physically active throughout the school day, including through active playtimes.
  • To raise the profile of PE, sport and physical activity across the school and recognise their contribution to whole-school improvement.
  • To increase the confidence, knowledge and skills of staff in teaching PE and supporting physical activity.
  • To provide pupils with a broad range of sports and physical activities.
  • To increase opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sport, including tournaments, festivals and events within the Gosforth Schools' Trust and across Newcastle.
  • To ensure opportunities are inclusive and enable pupils with different needs, abilities and levels of confidence to participate.
  • To ensure that improvements made through the PE and Sport Premium are sustainable and continue to benefit future pupils.

Sustainability

A key requirement of the PE and Sport Premium is that investment creates additional and sustainable improvements, rather than simply funding short-term provision.

We aim to achieve this by ensuring that:

  • Teachers and relevant staff develop their knowledge, confidence and skills through appropriate continuing professional development (CPD).
  • We work collaboratively with the Gosforth Schools' Trust and other appropriate partners.
  • Staff receive coaching and professional development that strengthens their knowledge and skills and supports high-quality PE teaching.
  • Good practice is modelled and shared with school staff, with opportunities for professional discussion and reflection.
  • The confidence and capability of non-specialist teaching staff to deliver high-quality PE are developed.
  • Assessment supports teachers in identifying pupils' participation, knowledge and skills and in planning appropriate progression.
  • PE lessons are appropriately sequenced to support the progressive development of pupils' knowledge and skills.
  • Pupils' knowledge, skills, participation and enthusiasm are monitored through PE subject leadership, including discussions with children.
  • The PE Subject Lead is supported in auditing resources and reviewing provision to ensure that PE can be delivered effectively across the school.
  • Investment in resources and provision is considered carefully to ensure it meets the conditions attached to the grant and provides sustainable benefit.
  • Governors are kept informed about developments in PE, sport and physical activity and the use and impact of the PE and Sport Premium.
  • The link governor works with the PE Subject Lead to provide appropriate oversight and report to the Governing Body.

Accountability and Reporting for 2026–2027

During 2026–2027, Gosforth Park First School will monitor both the expenditure and impact of the PE and Sport Premium.

In accordance with Department for Education requirements, the school will complete the digital PE and Sport Premium expenditure reporting return. This will include information about:

  • the school's allocation;
  • overall expenditure;
  • how the funding has been used;
  • the impact of the funding; and
  • swimming and water-safety attainment, where applicable.

The school will also publish information on its website detailing how the PE and Sport Premium has been spent, the impact on pupils' participation and attainment in PE and sport, and how improvements will be sustained.

The required reporting for the 2026–2027 academic year must be completed by 31 July 2027.

Involving Staff, Parents, Carers and Governors

The understanding and engagement of our staff, parents and carers is important to the continued development of PE, sport and physical activity at Gosforth Park First School.

Our Governors and Senior Leadership Team work with the PE Subject Lead to monitor and review PE, sport and physical activity provision and to consider the impact of Sports Premium expenditure.

We will continue to communicate opportunities for children to participate in physical activity and sport and encourage families to support children in developing healthy, active habits.

Our PE and Sport provision will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of our pupils, reflects current Department for Education requirements and supports our commitment to providing high-quality and sustainable opportunities for physical activity.
